Why charities are so important to Parcelforce Worldwide

Charities are central to life in Britain. From shops and shelters, from bucket collections to TV fundraisers, charity work is woven into every level of our society.

The Royal Mail Group’s ethos “be positive, be brilliant, be part of it” is expressed in its fundraising and its charity work. Louise Brinklow, PA to the Operation Director says that Parcelforce Worldwide’s fundraising efforts “brings people, departments, depots and Hub’s together in such a supportive way. Our employees, contractors and agency staff are incredibly positive, totally brilliant and pretty much everyone is a part of it. It gives us a huge sense of pride to be Parcelforce Worldwide!”

As experts who deliver up and down the country, Parcelforce Worldwide proudly takes its social responsibility seriously. Campaign Manager Kieran Cahill feels that a charitable outlook permeates the culture at Parcelforce Worldwide: “We are representatives of the business. Our staff go the extra mile by forming groups and competing with each other to raise the most for good causes.”

Working together and raising funds has the added bonus of improving relationships all across the business. Louise Brinklow sums up the unexpected benefit of charity work:

“On a personal level, my favourite part was meeting and getting to know other people at HQ and out in the business that I’d never spoken to before. This was really important to me as it’s so easy to only spend time with your own department. I loved making these new connections!”

Charities are chosen by the business and by staff voting. There are both major campaigns with business-wide activity and smaller fundraising efforts.

Action for Children

Action for Children helps disadvantaged and disabled children across the UK. Through providing assistance with fostering and adoption, early intervention to stop neglect and abuse, and policy work, their hardworking staff improves the lives of 301,000 children, teenagers, parents and carers every year. Action for Children fundraising efforts:
In 2018 the Parcelforce Worldwide Ops Challenge raised £ 48,569.66 for the charity, with activities and events that took place throughout the UK. There were many highlights. Here are just a few:

  • Fishing for Funds, Preston - Nigel Williams of Preston depot did an amazing job organising a charity fishing competition. Nigel arranged for raffle prizes, trophies and a lunch following the competition and raised £556
  • MK to Leicester (and back) - Simon Aris (RGM East) headed up a team of cyclists to bike from Parcelforce Worldwide Milton Keynes to Leicester. And back. Nick Wilcox, Kevin Kavanagh, Paul Wiggett, Mark Eady, Ian Coleman and Darren Harby were supported by Lee & Willis Cluer during their gruelling 138 miles - achieving this incredible feat in an impressive 9 hours
  • Super Solent - A raft of activities at the Solent depot raised £1,438.16. Some of which were non-uniform day, fortune cookie and cake sales, Shoot the Boss (Bob Watts), name a van and abseiling. Congratulations to everyone at Solent
  • Northern Ireland pulls together - Eileen Fitzsimons of Belfast expertly coordinated NI Parcelforce Depots - Belfast, Portadown and Derry. Supporting and encouraging everyone taking part, Eileen oversaw everything from an Easter Basket Raffle, sponsored cycle and the raffle of a Mother’s Day hamper

Parcelforce's fundraising efforts were recently recognised at the Royal Mail Group's Chairman's Awards for Excellence 2018 where we won 2 categories including the most money raised per head.

In 2019 we're aiming to go even bigger and better, with a raft of fundraising activities currently underway, including our Business Development Manager Warren's epic 'Pass the Parcel' challenge: Warren is travelling the length and breadth of the UK in just 10 days, visiting all our depots, hubs and offices to raise money, and collecting items for a special charity auction along the way.

How has all this fundraising helped Action for Children? Introducing…

The Blues Programme

The Blues Programme, funded exclusively by Royal Mail and Parcelforce Worldwide, is an internationally acclaimed preventative course for people aged 13-19 years-old who are suffering from, or who are at risk of developing a mental health disorder. 75% of adults with lifelong mental health issues first experience symptoms by 18. 

The Blues Programme aims to reach thousands of young people who are at risk of developing depression and other mental health issues, and make sure they get the help they need. This year, they’ll be working with selected schools, colleges and sixth forms to introduce the programme. Their ambition over the next year is to fund the roll-out of ‘Blues’ across the UK. Rowland Hill Fund

Rowland Hill Fund was set up for current and former employees of the Royal Mail Group who need a helping hand in difficult and traumatic circumstances That might be due to bereavement, illness, a struggle with family disabilities, home eviction, flood or paying for a funeral. Find out more.

Rowland Hill Fund fundraising efforts:

Staff can either donate directly or have a regular contribution automatically donated from their salaries. Staff at Parcelforce are looking to hold a week of awareness raising in September led by Rowland Hill Ambassadors, followed by a fundraising week in mid-October to support the charity and, in turn, help our own.  

OcuMel UK

Fundraising efforts began in November for ocular melanoma charity OcuMel UK. Ocular melanona is a rare form of eye cancer that has unfortunately affected one of our colleagues. Efforts to raise money for OcuMel UK have included an eye patch day, raffles and a sponsored four-and-a-half hour walk one weekend in November.

Willen Hospice

We have also raised money this year for Willen Hospice, a charity  that provides free care to people affected by life limiting illness, and is close to our Head Quarters location in Milton Keynes.

Other ways our staff help out

It’s not just fundraising either. Parcelforce Worldwide staff give more than just money to good causes, getting active and involved in their communities:

  • Using the train station as a collection point, staff in Milton Keynes collected and distributed clothes, toiletries, food and drink to the homeless.
  • There’s also been Individual fundraising for charities including Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Cancer Research UK.
  • Some depots have been providing free labour, helping clear and improving land.
